Donaldson's & NDCS Monthly 'Open Door' Sessions
Donaldson’s and the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) jointly operate a monthly support service for families of children who are deaf or have severe speech and language difficulties in central Scotland. The Open Door sessions, which are held at Donaldson’s new school in Linlithgow, offer parents and carers the opportunity to gain advice and support in dealing with day to day issues.
Run by experienced NDCS Family Officer, Marie Cafferky, the sessions provide an essential lifeline for families and also provide them with access to a number of other professionals. While NDCS currently provides one to one home-based support, this monthly service ensures parents and carers have the opportunity to chat with a wide range of professionals regarding any issues they may have. The sessions also provide a valuable opportunity for parents to meet with other parents, socialise and share their own experiences over a coffee.
Next Sessions:
- Thursday 5th February, 2009
We have two special guests confirmed for this session:
- Ingrid Fitsimmons, NDCS ‘Who Am I’ Project Manager. Presenting information on the project which supports young deaf people aged 13-19 and their parents (www.ndcs.org.uk/whoami)
- Signpost, a Livingston based voluntary organisation which offers information and support to young people with special needs and their families in West Lothian (www.signpost-online.co.uk)
- Thursday 5th March, 2009
- Thursday 2nd April, 2009
- Thursday 7th May, 2009
At every monthly session we can offer advice on topics such as: finance; help with benefits; medical support; education; and forthcoming events. Other local support organisations will also be invited to attend and parents and carers will be encouraged to suggest other topics of interest for future events.
Each Open Door session will run between 10am and 1pm on the first Thursday of every month. To find out more about Open Door sessions contact NDCS Family Officer Marie Cafferky on 07800 972 002.
